An old timber deck removed and rebuilt in fresh timber, finished with a grey stain for a modern, low-maintenance look, creating a larger, more usable outdoor entertaining space.
The existing timber deck sat directly off the back of the house, adjoining mature climbing plants and established brick walls. It was still structurally sound, but the surface was ageing and the space wasn't being used to its full potential as an outdoor entertaining area.
The brief was straightforward: replace the tired deck surface with something lower-maintenance, refresh the surrounding lawn, and make the most of the space right outside the doors without disturbing the established planting around it.
Beyond the deck itself, the wider garden had a well-established brick property with mature ivy and climbing plants trained up the walls — worth keeping and building around. But the ground either side of the deck was hard, compacted clay with no usable lawn to speak of, not simply grass that needed a refresh.
Turning that into a lawn that would actually stay green and hold up meant proper ground preparation, not just rolling out turf on top of what was already there.
Before
After
The existing timber deck was fully removed and the sub-frame checked and prepared before the new deck was rebuilt in fresh timber and finished with a grey stain, along with a matching charcoal-topped balustrade to tie the new deck into the existing garden railings and steps.
The lawn took considerably more work than a simple re-turf. Surface drains and a fertigation system were installed first, followed by 15 tonnes of seaweed-enriched topsoil to rebuild the ground itself. New turf was laid on top, then fed with three separate treatments of mycorrhizal solution to establish the root system properly.
The result is a lawn that's actually built to perform — lush and noticeably more drought-resistant than what was there before, rather than turf laid straight over the original compacted clay.
[DECK BOARD MANUFACTURER & SPECIFICATION TO BE ADDED]
The finished garden now has a substantial, low-maintenance grey-stained timber deck that works as a proper outdoor dining and entertaining space, framed by the mature planting on the brick property and a lush, drought-resistant lawn where compacted bare ground used to be.
It's a good example of what proper ground preparation and a well-built deck can do for how a garden actually gets used.
