What Our Decking Service Involves

Decking is one of the more straightforward ways to add usable, level outdoor space to a garden — especially where the ground slopes, drainage is poor, or an existing patio or deck has seen better days. We remove what's there if needed, check and prepare the ground and subframe properly, then build a deck designed to carry real garden furniture and everyday use, not just look good on day one.

We build every deck in pressure-treated timber, at two specifications — Basic and Premium. Both are timber; the difference is the grade of board, how the subframe is built, and how complex a design it can support. We're upfront about which one actually suits your project rather than steering everyone toward the same option — covered in more detail below.

Basic & Premium Decking

We build two tiers of deck, depending on budget and how the space will be used. Neither is "wrong" — we'll help you weigh up the trade-offs during your consultation rather than push the more expensive option by default.

Basic

Basic Decking

Pressure-treated softwood timber decking on a standard timber frame. A functional, durable, traditional-looking deck at a lower cost than our Premium build.

  • Standard-grade pressure-treated softwood timber boards
  • Standard timber frame construction
  • Traditional, natural timber look
  • Well suited to smaller areas, side returns and tighter budgets
  • Needs periodic treatment or staining to keep the timber protected
Premium

Premium Decking

Still timber, built to a higher specification — better-grade boards on a more heavily engineered subframe, for bigger, more complex layouts and a noticeably neater finish than our Basic build.

  • Higher-grade timber boards, selected for straighter grain and fewer knots than standard-grade stock
  • Heavier-duty joists and closer joist spacing for a stiffer, more solid deck underfoot
  • Engineered subframe capable of supporting raised decks, multi-level layouts and longer spans
  • Supports more complex designs — curves, herringbone or diagonal board patterns, built-in seating and integrated balustrades
  • A refined, finished look with tighter board lines and neater detailing throughout
  • Still timber, so it still needs periodic treatment or staining — the higher-grade boards just tend to take it more evenly and hold their finish longer between coats
  • Suited to larger, design-led projects — see example projects: Grey-Stained Timber Deck · Garden Deck with Balustrade

Every garden is different — ground conditions, height changes and how you plan to use the space all affect what's actually achievable. We'll recommend the right build for your project during a free site visit rather than guessing over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Basic and Premium decking?

Both are pressure-treated timber. Basic uses standard-grade boards on a standard frame — a solid, functional deck at a lower cost. Premium uses higher-grade timber on a more heavily engineered subframe, which supports raised decks, multi-level designs and more complex board patterns, with a noticeably neater finish. We'll help you decide which fits your project and budget during your consultation.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Most residential decks take between a few days and two weeks to build, depending on size, height changes, and whether an existing deck or structure needs removing first. We'll give you a clear timeline during your site visit.

Do I need planning permission for a deck?

Most garden decks fall under permitted development, but decks raised more than 300mm above ground level, or those in conservation areas, may need permission. We'll advise on this as part of your consultation and site survey.

How much maintenance does a timber deck need?

All timber decking needs periodic treatment or staining to protect it from the weather — typically every year or two, depending on exposure. Premium's higher-grade timber tends to take treatment more evenly and hold its finish longer between coats, but no timber deck is maintenance-free.
